When Matthew was young, he discovered that someone was behind a locked door in the Defoe manor kitchen. He tried to become friends with the boy, even though all he did was knock on the door. His father is shown in either denying the other boy's existence or becoming angry when he was mentioned.

On his fifteenth birthday, Matthew shows his painting to the boy under the door. Having heard this, his father, gets very angry and it may be part of the trigger that inspired John Defoe's demise.
